Animal Protection is not a Joke!
Last week, Maryland Votes For Animals testified at the hearing for Spay/Neuter of Dangerous Dogs, H.B. 15, which was sponsored by Delegate Haddaway-Riccio. Thank you Delegate Haddaway-Riccio!
Unfortunately, not all the delegates on the committee were sensitive to the issue of dangerous dogs and the related problem of dog fighting. Some made comments that showed woeful ignorance to the benefits of neutering dogs, acting embarrassed and squeamish about the surgery and saying, "Are we going to penalize the dog for being aggressive?" Others made jokes like this one:
"Imagine that the dog from the Little Rascals was in a dog fight and won. Are we going to neuter him and punish him for winning a fight?" Much snickering and inaudible comments from several male delegates.
If you care about animals, then I'm sure you're as frustrated reading this as I was when I heard it. So let's take action...
Please call or email Chairman Del. Vallario's office and politely ask him to give a favorable report to this bill. His contact information is 410-841-3488 or email him at joseph.vallario@house.state.md.us.
Then contact your delegate if he or she is on the committee. Here's the list of committee members. http://www.msa.md.gov/msa/mdmanual/06hse/html/com/05jud.html
Lastly, if you don't know who your delegates are or how to contact them then here's how: Go to http://mdelect.net/electedofficials/ and type your address into the boxes below the map. All your representatives will pop up on the left side of the page with a link to their contact information. But today, just contact 1) Chairman Vallario and 2) your delegate if they sit on the House Judiciary committee.
Here's a sample email that you can use or alter as you see fit:
Dear Delegate Vallario:
I am a citizen of Maryland who cares about animals and want them to be well-treated. Therefore, I'm writing to you today to ask that you give a favorable report to H.B. 15, Spay/Neuter of Dangerous Dogs.
Animal protection is not a joke despite the behavior of several delegates in the hearing for this bill. It is a serious matter that deserves the attention and concern of our lawmakers. Therefore, please support H.B. 15, Spay/Neuter of Dangerous Dogs.
