Governor O'Malley - Stop the Bear Hunt

October 20, 2011
Dear Governor O'Malley:
The many people throughout Maryland who care about the humane treatment of animals---including the thousands of members of Maryland Votes For Animals, PAC---cannot forget that you broke your promise and allowed the killing of Maryland's Black Bears. Every year the hunt starts again, and every year we remember that you promised to continue the half-century ban on this inhumane hunt, and yet you broke your promise to us.
Perhaps with the many stresses of your job you have put this issue on the back burner, somewhat understandably, but not to those of us who know how quickly and how easily you could end the senseless killing. There is absolutely no legitimate reason to kill the few bears in Maryland; to continue to allow this hunt shows that you are out-of-step with most Marylanders and have succumbed to the pressures of the hunting community who kill living creatures for "sport."
In closing, Maryland Votes For Animals asks that you immediately stop this bear hunt, because no one needs a barbaric bear trophy in their house. Instead we need to stop the killing and work together to create a more humane, compassionate and enlightened Maryland.
Sincerely, Carolyn Kilborn
Chair
Maryland Votes For Animals
